Kedarnath Attractions/Tourist places/Local Sightseeing

Kedarnath is a Hindu holy town located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is a nagar panchayat in Rudraprayag district. The most remote of the four Char Dham sites, Kedarnath is located in the Himalayas, about 3584m above sea level near the head of river Mandakini, and is flanked by breathtaking snow-capped peaks. Kedarnath hosts one of the holiest Hindu temples and is a popular destination for Hindu pilgrims from all over the world.

Chandrashila #1

One among the pictorial locations in the Rudraprayag District, Chandrashila is placed at an elevation of 3679 meter. Its easy accessibility makes it a much desired trekking spot in the locality. Except in December to January, this peak is suitable for trekking and allied activities. Chandrashila trek is categorized as a moderate level trek, which would take a complete week.

Vasudhara Falls #1

It can be reached by a short and easy trek of 4km from Mana Village. Vasudhara falls is 400 feet high and it is set at an elevation of 12,000feet above sea level. It is believed that the scattered drops of the waterfall don’t falls on the sinners. If you see the waterfall from distance it will look like as if milk is falling from the mountain.

Satopanth #2

Satopanth Lake holds immaculate and pristine water and it is believed that Bheema was denied to enter heaven from this very point. Satopanth is the place which leads the path to Swargarohini peak from where Yudhishthir and the dog were sent to heaven according to the Mahabharata. The trek to Satopanth is moderate and there are no villages and rest houses, people generally sleep in caves and tents here. The route to Satopanth Sarovar blesses the individuals with nature’s beauteousness.

Pandukeshwar #3

This place is believed to have been established by King Pandu, father of Pandavas. It is situated at 4 kms from Govind Ghat, 219 kms from Kedarnath and 24 kms from Badarinath. There are two temples – one for Lord Yoga Badari Narayan and the other for Lord Vasudev. During winter, Lord Vasudev temple functions as the abode for Lord Badari Narayan and all the daily rituals connected with worship are performed here. Both the temples are centuries old.

Joshimath #4

Joshimath is one of the four ‘math’ created by Adi Shankaracharya. Joshimath is the home of Shri Badrinath during winters. Joshimath is connected with Auli by highest cable car of Asia. Joshimath is situated at an elevation of 1,890mts above sea level. Do visit Kalpavriksha and Narsingh temple while a visit to Joshimath. It is situated 46kms from Badrinath.

Auli #5

Auli is the most popular skiing and paragliding spot of Uttarakhand situated at an elevation of 3050mts above sea level. Auli affords astounding and celestial views of the enchanting snow laden Himalayan range. Asia’s highest and longest cable car is situated in Auli connecting it with Joshimath. Auli will be hosting SAF winter games in 2010. Auli is also connected with motorable roads, situated 60kms from Badrinath.

Valley of Flowers #6

Valley of Flowers National Park is nestled in the west Himalayas covering an area of 87.50sqkms. The trek of 16km to Valley of Flowers commences from Govindghat. The valley is entirely covered with blooming flowers from June to October and with the sheets of snow during winters. The valley of flowers was declared as the national park in the year 1982 and it is now a world heritage site. The virgin beauty of this valley lures the botanists, nature lovers and adventure lovers as well.

Hemkund Sahib #7

The tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Govind Singhji mediated at Hemkund Sahib for years. The word Hemkund literally suggests 'Lake of snow' and the immaculate water of this lake is as cold as snow. Hemkund Saheb is located at an elevation of 4,329mts above sea level amidst several snow capped peaks, which are collectively called Hemkund Parvat. A star shaped gurudwara near the lake is visited by thousands of devotees every month. A temple dedicated to Lakshman, brother of Lord Rama is also located here. One must complete a trek of 19km starting from from Govindghat via Ghangaria to reach Hemkund Sahib.

Adi Badari #8

The main Temple is of the lord Narayan that is distinguished by a raised platform in the pyramidal form. Here a black stone idol of lord Vishnu is enshrined. Local tradition attributes the building of the temples to Adi Guru Shankaracharya. It is situated at a distance of 17 Kms from Karnaprayag and is easily approachable by motorable road.

Gangotri is one of the major religious places for Hindus amongst the (four) Char Dham pilgrimage areas. Gangotri is located in Uttarkashi district and is dedicated to the Goddess Ganga. The river is also famous as Ganges. According to the myths, there is a long history of Gangotri which dates back to centuries when Goddess Ganga transformed herself in the form of river. The major reason behind the transformation into river is to dissolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s forefathers, following his sacrament. In the 18th century, Gangotri Temple was built by a Gorkha Commander that stands at an altitude of almost 3042 meters. Here in the temple, several religious rituals are performed by the pujaris which include the Arti ceremony. The holy river Ganges originated from the Gangotri glacier. Here it is known as Bhagirathi, when the river passes Devaprayag and is merged into the river Alaknanda, only then is it called the Ganga.

Gangotri Temple

The temple of Gangotri is located at a height of 3200 m above sea level. It is 100 km from Gangotri and was established in the 18th century by General Amar Singh Thapa, on the banks of the Bhagirathi. It is very popular among pilgrims. Quite a number of ashrams have come up on various sites which offer decent accommodation. Some of the nearby places that can be visited are Kedarkund, Gaurikund and Patangna.

Bhagirathi Shila

Bhagirathi Shila is the rock, where King Bhagirath is said to have meditated. This stone near the temple of Ganga signifies the site where Goddess Ganga first stepped down to earth.

Pandav Gufa

The Pandav Gufa can be reached after a trek of 1.5 km from Gangotri. This very site is believed to be the place, where the Pandavas of Mahabharata meditated on their way to Kailash.

Gauri Kund and Surya Kund

Gauri Kund and Surya Kund lie on either side of an iron bridge located half a kilometre ahead of the Gangotri Temple. Surya Kund is known for the Surya Kund waterfalls.

Jalmagna Shivling /Submerged Shivling

Devoted to Lord Shiva, the Vishwanath Temple is situated around 300 m away from Gangotri’s local bus stand. This temple received a new look after its renovation in 1857 by Sudarshan Shah’s wife, Maharani Khaneti. The temple has a Shivling, 90 cm wide and 60 cm high. It is a very famous spot for visitors to Gangotri, Gangotri and Yamunotri

Gaumukh

The main source of the Ganga or the Bhagirathi River is the Gaumukh glacier. This is the main reason a large number of devotees visit this place to take a dip in the ice cold water. It is 18 km from Gangotri and the trek to Gaumukh from Gangotri is easy.

Yamunotri is a very important pilgrimage and one of the sites of the Char Dham yatra. This town is situated about 3293m above the sea in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by mountains from all sides, it offers scenic view to the pilgrims here. You can also view Indo-China border as it is located at close proximity to it. With the close proximity of mountains, it is also an ideal place for trekking and rock climbing. Rugged peaks and dense forests of the area provide immense pleasure to travellars here.
